Wood Pellet Stoves are a new and very popular way as a means to provide heat. Pellet stoves burn wood pellets as a primary source of heat. Wood pellets are generally made from sawdust, coming from sawmills, recycling centers, furniture manufacturers, etc. They are very tightly compacted enabling them to be burned very efficiently and in turn produce a high source of heat. Since the wood pellets are usually varying in size from a half up to an inch, and somewhat lightweight, they are very easy to transport. Wood pellets can be purchased for about $1.00 per 10lbs. Also, since they are actually made from wood, they are very environmentally friendly.
Wood pellet stoves are generally freestanding stoves specifically designed to burn wood pellets, however pellet inserts can be purchased to allow your standard wood-burning fireplace to burn wood pellets. Each wood pellet stove and pellet insert contains a “hopper” which can hold anywhere from 30 to 130lbs of wood pellets. Each stove also has a fan to vent all gases outside. You can even install certain stoves and fireplaces in such a way to replace your old source of heat, whether it is gas or electric, and use them to heat the whole house. These are known as pellet furnaces. With the cost of gas and electricity continuing to go up, pellet stoves and fireplaces continue to gain popularity, and are a much more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative.

I think that wood pellet stoves are a viable alternative to fossil fuels. However, I think that for those people who live in large urban centers the cost of sourcing the wood pellets may be significantly more than those who live in rural area where the supply of raw material is greater.

interesting post thanks. we most definitely have to keep an eye on new develpments as fossil fuels will obviously not last forever. i personally believe we will find a solution. we are a resourceful species, to say the least.

Good day!
A properly cleaned and maintained pellet stove should not create creosote, the sticky, flammable substance that causes chimney fires. Pellets burn very cleanly and create only a layer of fine fly-ash as a byproduct of combustion. The grade of pellet fuel affects the performance and ash output. Premium grade pellets produce less than one percent ash content, while standard or low grade pellets produce a range from two to four percent ash.
