It could possibly work well, but there is also the chance that there is damage to it or, if it is a sectioned unit, the seals in between the sections could crack.

I think so.

Finding a Cheap Pellet Stove

Posted: December 26, 2009 – 4:54 pm

Pellet stoves are expensive. They may offer a less expensive heating solution for your home, but the initial cash outlay can often be prohibitive. While it’s generally true that you have to spend money to save money, a lot of people are looking for less expensive alternatives, but they don’t want to sacrifice quality in order to buy a cheap pellet stove. They wonder if it’s really worth paying the extra to buy an expensive one. What are the extras you get for the extra money, and is the increased value worth the extra money involved? Even more to the point, is there really such a thing as a cheap pellet stove?

Let’s start with the last question first. What exactly is a cheap pellet stove? If you search for pellet stoves online, you’ll find that most of them are in the price range of $1700 to $2500 and up. The cheapest new pellet stove I found was $875. Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t consider $875 a cheap price for anything. However, if you compare it to the other models online, I guess you could call it cheaper. You can find inexpensive models on eBay, but when you read the fine print, you’ll see that they are either used or refurbished. If that isn’t an issue with you, then you may be able to find a used stove for as little as $300.

So, is a more expensive stove going to do a better job of heating your home, and is it worth spending the extra money? The answer for most people is yes. For starters, the more expensive stoves are much more aesthetically pleasing than the less expensive models and blend in with your décor more nicely. They have large windows so you can sit and watch the fire burning. The high-end stoves are built to be sturdier and last longer. In addition, they have more safety and self-cleaning features than you get on the cheap pellet stoves. The better stoves have separate storage units built in where you can store extra wood, and both the pellet and ash bins are larger so that you don’t have to take care of them as often.

It’s pretty much up to you to decide, though, if you want to spend the additional cash to get features like these or if all you’re looking for is to heat your home less expensively.

“Cash For Wood Pellet Stove Clunkers”

Posted: December 26, 2009 – 4:52 pm

OK,  so I’m borrowing a little phrase for the government to open up a little info on an article I came across today. It seems that New Hampshire has a program where if you have some old outdated wood stoves that could be deemed unsafe, you can trade them in and get some cash towards a new one.

Actually, there’s about 35 communities worldwide that offer the same deal. Check out the whole article about cash for wood pellet stove clunkers.

Safety Features on Your Pellet Stove

Posted: December 26, 2009 – 4:39 pm

If you have a built-in fireplace in your home but have decided that you want to increase its heating efficiency with a fireplace insert pellet stove, you’re probably making a good choice. These stoves can give you a cheap, clean, and easy way to heat your entire home – or at least the areas connected to the room where the fireplace stands – and they can look very nice, too. However, be sure that you buy a stove with plenty of safety features, including a fire-resistant surface on which to place it, carbon monoxide detectors, and proper ventilation.

If you buy a fireplace insert stove, you probably won’t need a fire-resistant mat, especially if you already have a hearth. Pellet burning stoves that are more like traditional wood-burning stoves, on the other hand, will take either tiled, fire-proof platforms or special fire-resistant mats that will keep it from catching any flammable materials on fire. You can get these mats in many different colors, and you should always check to see if your stove requires something like this.

Although pellet-burning stoves are very safe and clean-burning, they still burn organic materials, which can give off carbon monoxide sometimes. While you should have a carbon monoxide detector or two in your home anyway, it’s especially important to install them when you have any type of stove. When you have a pellet-burning stove – whether it is a fireplace insert pellet stove or another type of pellet stove – you should plug a carbon monoxide detector within ten feet of the stove.

Finally, be sure that your fireplace insert is properly ventilated. You can probably use the chimney of the original fireplace, but you will have to modify it on some levels, being sure to keep it clean and free from obstructions. A pellet stove takes less ventilation than wood-burning stoves, and they burn more cleanly than other types of stoves. However, you’ll need to regularly service your stove’s ventilation system so that it stays safe and efficient.

Some stoves can come with added safety features, such as a temperature switch that will turn them off and on at certain times during the day or when the temperature gets too high. When you look at these pellet-burning stoves, be sure that you find one with all the requisite safety features so that you can easily heat your home in a safe way.

How to Choose a Wood Pellet Stove

Posted: December 21, 2009 – 10:23 pm

Pellet stoves can provide supplemental or even primary heat in your home, helping to cut your heating bills. There are a couple models to choose from: a freestanding model that will take up living space, or a fireplace insert if you have a traditional fireplace already.

A fireplace insert is probably the best option if you have a fireplace. Wood burning fires in the fireplace are only about 25% efficient, and a pellet stove beats that hands down. This option also saves you from having to give up living space for the stove.

Pellet stoves and wood stoves look similar on the outside, but inside they’re nothing alike. Pellet stoves have a few moving parts, some of which need occasional maintenance. And, as the name implies, they burn wood pellets rather than wood logs. These pellets are made of recycled wood shavings, sawdust or even corn and wheat bits.

One of the big benefits to a pellet stove is that you don’t need to keep the fire stoked ? the pellet hopper delivery system automatically feeds the pellets as necessary. You only need to be sure the hopper stays full, but you won’t need to keep stoking the fire as with a wood burning stove.

There are other considerations when considering the purchase of a pellet stove

One, if you like to watch the fire flames flicker, be sure to get a stove with a good flame pattern and a good sized viewing glass.

It helps to have a model with easy access to the parts that will eventually need servicing. If you don’t want to service them yourself, consider a service contract and extended warranty.

You will also have to choose between a top-feed system and a bottom-feed system. And of course, there are pros and cons to having either one.

Top-fed stoves can be safer in that the fire stays out of the hopper. On the other hand, a top feed model is more likely to become clogged with ash and clinkers.

The bottom-feed models aren’t as likely to get stuck with ash particles, but the fire can burn back into the pellet hopper. You still need to clean the ash out of these regularly. So another consideration is how large the ash pan is and how easy it is to remove and clean.

Unlike wood stoves, a pellet stove needs electricity to power the motors, so keep that in mind when deciding where to put your stove.

And, of course, you need to be sure you buy the right sized stove. Stoves use British Thermal Units (BTUs) to measure heat output. You’ll need 25 to 30 BTU per square foot of space you’re heating. So, if you’re heating a 300 square foot area, you’ll need at least 7,500 BTU/h on your stove.

There are other considerations when looking at BTUs, such as the quality pellet you burn, the temperature where you are, the insulation factor of your walls and roof, and more. Make note of these things and ask lots of questions of some reputable dealers.

If you really come to love the efficiency of your pellet stove, keep in mind that you can even get a larger unit to replace your entire furnace!

Wood pellet stoves are becoming very popular as a way to supplement or heat a home entirelyThe popularity of pellet stoves is increasing, especially now that heating costs are going up so much more. With some foreknowledge, some good questions, and a reputable dealer, you will be able to make a purchase that will serve ? and heat ? your family comfortably for years to come.
